China National Medical Device Co Ltd (CMDC), a subsidiary of China National Pharmaceutical Group Co Ltd (Sinopharm), signed an agreement with General Electric HealthCare China (GE Healthcare China) on Feb 24 in Beijing. The two parties announced the establishment of a joint venture in China on the research, development and manufacturing of high-end medical imaging equipment. CMDC will hold the majority stake.

Helmut Zodl, vice-president and chief financial officer of GE Healthcare, said that GE Healthcare and Sinopharm have engaged in close cooperation over the past 30 years since the establishment of GE Hangwei Medical Systems Co Ltd (GE Hangwei) in China. He said he believes that the newly established joint venture could leverage the professional expertise and strong capabilities of the two parties. He said that GE Healthcare looks forward to continuing its collaboration with Sinopharm to bring better healthcare services to the Chinese people.

Yu Qingming, chairman of Sinopharm Group Co Ltd, said that through this joint venture project, CMDC would engage in R&D and manufacturing cooperation with GE Healthcare China. He said that product registration, market launch and effective production will rapidly enhance the safety, effectiveness and quality of domestically produced medical imaging equipment.

He said he hopes that the new company would focus on the urgent needs of grassroots healthcare and provide more targeted and economic medical devices to enable more people to enjoy high-quality medical services.
