Roger Kornberg, a Nobel laureate in chemistry, Winzer Professor in Medicine at the Department of Structural Biology at Stanford University School of Medicine and chairman of the World Laureates Association, visited China National Pharmaceutical Group Co Ltd (Sinopharm) on July 29.

Sinopharm Chairman Liu Jingzhen and a team of scientists from the group engaged in discussions with Kornberg to explore collaborative efforts in advancing cutting-edge research in biomedicine and deepening cooperation in the development of high-value innovative biopharmaceuticals.

Kornberg and his delegation visited Shanghai Institute of Biological Products Co Ltd and the headquarters of Sinopharm Group Co Ltd.

At Shanghai Institute of Biological Products Co Ltd, they explored the technology exhibition hall, gaining insight into the digitalized biopharmaceutical factory, its innovation and research deployment, and the transformation of scientific research achievements into industrial applications.

Liu said that Kornberg has made significant contributions to the field of biomedicine through long-term research, achieving major milestones in fundamental discipline construction, drug industry transformation, and the cultivation of young scientists.

Sinopharm, as a Fortune Global 500 company, has played a prominent role in implementing the Healthy China 2030 initiative, promoting the development of the biopharmaceutical industry, and building a global community of health for all.

Notably, the company has achieved significant research results in the prevention and control of major diseases, particularly providing robust support in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

Liu highlighted the vast potential for collaboration between Sinopharm and Kornberg’s team, anticipating a bright and promising future.

Kornberg shared the research achievements of his development team, covering areas such as novel diagnostic technologies, drug target research, drug discovery, peptide drug delivery systems, and quantum computing and artificial intelligence-based drug design.

He emphasized that biomedicine stands as one of the most technologically advanced, innovative and dynamic fields in the current global technological revolution.

He acknowledged Sinopharm’s distinct brand advantages and extensive product portfolio, as well as its innovative technologies and product development of biopharmaceuticals, and expressed his willingness for deeper cooperation in various domains with the company.

The visit was attended by officials of UAE-owned firm G42, Hayat Biotech, KF Futures, Sinopharm Group Co Ltd, China State Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry Co Ltd, and Shanghai Shyndec Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, along with people in charge of relevant departments of Sinopharm headquarters, China National Biotec Group Co Ltd and Shanghai Institute of Biological Products Co Ltd.
