Opening of Enmore Regional Hospital boosts China-Guyana medical cooperation

The Enmore Regional Hospital in Guyana, a collaborative effort between China Sinopharm International Corporation and China CAMC Engineering Co Ltd, commenced operation on July 4. This marks the completion of the second facility under the first China-Guyana cooperative medical infrastructure project, further enhancing healthcare services in the region.

Mohamed Irfaan Ali, president of Guyana, Frank Anthony, the country’s minister of health, Yang Yang, Chinese ambassador to Guyana, and Li Hanqing, counselor of the Chinese embassy in Guyana, attended the opening ceremony, along with Cui Jiao, head of Sinopharm International’s Guyana office.

President Ali livestreamed the opening ceremony on his social media platform, calling the hospital a world-class facility that will significantly improve the standard of care available to local communities. He expressed appreciation for China’s sustained support in Guyana’s health sector and voiced readiness to deepen friendly cooperation with China in various sectors.

Ambassador Yang noted that the hospital built by Chinese enterprises will not only provide local residents with first-class medical environment and services, but also continue to contribute in areas such as equipment maintenance and personnel training. China is willing to deepen cooperation with Guyana and write a new chapter in the friendship between the two countries, Yang added.

Located near the capital of Guyana, the Enmore Regional Hospital covers more than 6,000 square meters. Equipped with advanced medical facilities including CT scanners, digital X-ray systems and mobile emergency devices, it offers a full range of services from basic examinations and precision diagnosis to specialized treatment and emergency care.

The hospital is part of Sinopharm’s broader support for improving Guyana’s national healthcare capacity, and is regarded as a flagship project under China’s “Health Silk Road” initiative.

Local media hailed the opening of the hospital as a milestone in Guyana’s healthcare development, describing it as “a door to the future” and “a new era of healthcare”, where all citizens, regardless of income, have access to high-quality, modern and people-centered care. 

Patients visiting the hospital on the opening day expressed appreciation for the medical equipment provided by China, which enables them to receive international-standard services close to home. Many were excited about the facilities, which now offer comprehensive treatment across multiple fields, including gynecology, audiology, dentistry, ophthalmology, psychological support and general medical care. 

The opening follows the successful delivery of the China-Guyana cooperative medical infrastructure project’s first facility, the Diamond Regional Hospital, which has maintained a stable daily patient intake and has gained widespread recognition from the local community.

Patients have praised its medical expertise, comfortable environment and efficient services, adding that their experiences far exceeded expectations. They also expressed gratitude to the Chinese government and Sinopharm for bringing tangible health benefits to the region.
