Sinopharm International — the overseas trading and investment arm of Bejing-based pharma developer and manufacturer Sinopharm — recently launched its first bilateral medical training project in Georgetown, capital of the South American republic of Guyana.

The seminar is sponsored by China's Ministry of Commerce. It's jointly organized by the ministry's Academy for International Business Officials (AIBO) and Sinopharm International.

China's Ambassador to Guyana Yang Yang, the Guyana Minister of Health Frank Anthony, Sinopharm International Development Center General Manager Cui Jiao, and Guyana project lead Si Yu attended the opening ceremony along with over 70 participants.

As Sinopharm International's flagship overseas medical training program, the initiative marked a significant step forwards in deepening healthcare cooperation between China and Guyana as it shifts the focus from delivering medical infrastructure to fostering local expertise and building up long-term local capabilities.

Focusing on the digital transformation of Guyana's healthcare system, the overseas seminar has generated keen interest in both countries.

Chinese Ambassador Yang noted that the program reflected both sides' efforts to embrace digital healthcare trends and to strengthen talent training.

China remained committed to helping Guyana cultivate local professionals — integrating talent, technology and medical facilities to inject new momentum into building a Healthy Silk Road, Yang said.

Guyana's health minister lauded China's long-term support of his nation's healthcare development.

Highlighting the vital role of digital technology in improving the efficiency and management of medical services, he called on the participants to apply what they had learned fully in order to advance Guyana's healthcare sector.

In recent years, Sinopharm International has played a key role in developing six regional hospital projects in Guyana, located on the northern coast of South America.

Equipped with a full suite of advanced Chinese medical equipment, the newly established regional healthcare network has treated over 75,000 patients and performed over 1,000 surgeries in just six months.

To ensure long-term operational efficiency, the seminar combines lectures with practical field training — transferring China's advanced healthcare management expertise and technical achievements to the local system.
