In 1934, the Northwest Epidemic Prevention Office (the predecessor of the Lanzhou Institute of Biological Products) was established in Lanzhou, Gansu province. It was tasked to investigate and prevent animal diseases in Northwest China, as well as to manufacture urgently needed disease prevention and treatment products for animals.
