• In 1934, the Northwest Epidemic Prevention Office (the predecessor of the Lanzhou Institute of Biological Products) was established in Lanzhou, Gansu province. It was tasked to investigate and prevent animal diseases in Northwest China, as well as to manufacture urgently needed disease prevention and treatment products for animals.

  • In 1937, during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), the Central Pharmaceutical Factory (the predecessor of Southwest Pharmaceutical) provided a large quantity of anesthetic drugs to hundreds of units at or above division level of the Chinese army.

  • In 1946, the Northeast Democratic Allied Forces took over the Changchun Health Technical Factory, which was later renamed the Northeast Health Technical Factory (the predecessor of the Changchun Institute of Biological Products).

  • In 1950, Tong Cun, a renowned microbial pharmacologist who later served as director of the Antibiotic Division, and deputy head and honorary head of the Shanghai Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry, conducted research with other researchers.

  • In early 1950, the Central Epidemic Prevention Office (the predecessor of Sinopharm's Beijing Institute of Biological Products), located at the Temple of Heaven, administered vaccines to children.

  • In 1955, the world's first strain of chlamydia trachomatis, isolated by Tang Feifan's research team, was named TE8, having a significant impact in the international medical community.

  • The China Medicinal Materials Company was established on Mar 1, 1955, in response to the reply of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China to the report on the operation of Chinese medicinal materials.

  • In 1957, the Shanghai Pharmaceutical Industry Research Institute was established (later renamed the Shanghai Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry, SIPI). The photo shows the early days of the Shanghai Industrial Testing Institute of the Ministry of Light Industry of the Central People's Government.
